Greetings -
Has anybody installed the UNIX "face" x11 onto a Mac? I'd like to know if this is recommended and how to go about it. The purpose is to install OpenOffice so I can perform Arabic language word processing.
I found out about it here:
Arabic programs
QUOTE from site: The most "ideological" of these efforts is called "OpenOffice", which is seen as a real alternative to Microsoft on many platforms. The Mac version of the program of that name requires the installation of a Unix face ("X11") on your machine.
(X11 is an alternative to the regular "top-level" system of your Mac, but on the same lower-level basis. It is not very commonly used, because it is in fact straight Unix (under "X Window system"), but has the advantage that it should be able to run most regular Unix programs, including those that support Arabic, on your Mac. It does use its own resources, fonts etc., so it is a bit of a different ball game from "regular Mac" usage, but if you are adventurous, try it out, there are of course huge amounts of free Unix software on the net that then becomes available to you.)
